He served in the Crimean War and guarded the new border between Turkey and Russia, then left for China and returned to England in 1865. For 6 years he devoted himself to the poor, visiting the sick and clothing the most destitute. In 1873, he left for Egypt and Sudan.
Autograph letter signed dated Le Havre, 19.05.1881 to M. Gees: "...Je partirai pour Marseille le 23 Mai. J'ai été trompé du départ de mon bateau. C'est pour cette raison je suis resté si longtemps..."
