Description

He commanded the 1st British Army Corps, which covered the reembarkation of British troops at Dunkirk in 1940. Deputy to Eisenhower as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces in North Africa (1943), he played a leading role in the Tunisian and Italian campaigns. In November 1944, he took command of the Mediterranean theatre of operations. Governor of Canada from 1946 to 1952, he was Minister of Defence in the Churchill Cabinet (1952-1954).
