After studying law, he became mayor of Montélimar and general councillor. A moderate Republican, he was elected deputy for Drôme. President of the Council in 1892, he was elected President of the Republic in 1899. Autograph letter signed dated Paris, 12.06.1911 “:…si vous pouviez venir après-demain mercredi entre cinq et six heures ou jeudi vers onze heures le matin, vous seriez à peu près sûr de me rencontrer…”.
