Last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (1792 - 1806). Defeated several times by France, he was forced to grant his daughter Marie-Louise's hand in marriage to Napoleon I in 1810. The Congress of Vienna conferred on him the presidency of the German Confederation in 1815. A staunch absolutist influenced by Metternich, he suppressed liberal movements in Germany and Italy.
Document signed dated Vienna, 08.03.1822, appointing Field Marshal Lieutenant Joseph Comte de l'Epine to the rank of colonel (51x71 cm).
