A retired general, he was recalled in 1914 to stem the Russian advance. He was given sole command of the German and Austrian armies. He imposed his views on Wilhelm II. In 1918, he was behind the first German request for an armistice. Elected to the Reich Presidency in 1925, he called Hitler to the Chancellery in 1933.
