He studied economics in Heidelberg. In 1818, he married Sophie, Princess of Sweden. Liberal but depressed, traumatised by the ambition and intrigues of his mother and his wife, he took refuge in alcohol. He was confronted with the political turmoil of the first half of the 19th century. He hated reigning and wanted to abdicate, but his wife prevented him from doing so.
