HISTORY - FREDERICK II (1712 - 1786) - Letter signed
Lot 323 · The Langer Collection · 29 April 2024
From childhood, he tried to reconcile his passion for the arts and literature with the needs of his political and military destiny. A realistic statesman and excellent warlord, he made Prussia a worthy rival to the House of Habsburg. He governed his country with tact, maintaining the tradition of a strong state, but also knowing how to modernise the structures that required it: he developed education, abolished torture, etc. An admired sovereign throughout Europe, he was a friend to many writers and scholars. He made Berlin a capital of enlightenment.
Letter signed "Fridrich" written in German and addressed to a “Serene Highness”, Berlin, January 6, 1780, 1/2 p. large in-4°. Missing repaired in the margin to the left. He thanks his correspondent for the wishes he sent him on the occasion of the renewal of the year and transmits his own to him.
