General, he fought in the War of Independence with Lafayette. Ambassador to Russia, he was admitted into the intimacy of Catherine II. He returned to France and was admitted to the Académie française in 1803. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. Recalled by the Consul, he was the Emperor's grand master of ceremonies. Peer of France in 1818. Poet and historian, he wrote many works.
Autograph letter signed: "… sa Majesté a décidé que cette députation serait introduite par moi dans la salle du trône …”.
