Studied law in Dijon. He entered the judiciary and began a political career as deputy for the Seine Inférieure. He was a friend of Flaubert, who asked him to defend Maupassant. He was a professor of commercial history at the Ecole des HEC in Paris.
Autograph letter signed and dated Lundi, 14.06.1871: "…Vous trouverez ci inclus, trois billets de 1er rang, pour la séance de demain …".
