Influenced by politics from a very young age, he refused to join any party. He was elected to the Senate in 1921, Minister of Public Education in 1924 and delegate to the United Nations in 1922 and 1924. French high commissioner in Syria, then ambassador to Italy, he tried to convince Mussolini to come over to the French side. He was the husband of Colette (woman of letters).
Autograph letter signed dated 07.12.1927 :"… et je serai ravi d'aller, mardi prochain, déposer à vos pieds…".
