Destined for the diplomatic service from an early age, he served as an embassy attaché in the Vatican, Berlin and then Washington. After 2 years at the Quai d'Orsay, he was First Secretary in Petersburg, Athens and Vienna. He represented France in Ankara before being appointed ambassador to Rome. Grand officier de la Légion d'honneur, he was admitted to the Académie française on 4 April 1946.
