HISTORY - CALONNE Charles Alexandre (1734 - 1802) - Letter signed
Intendant in Metz, then Lille, he was appointed Controller General of Finances by Louis XVI in 1783. Charged with resolving the financial crisis, he applied the policy of major works (construction of the Burgundy canal and the ports of Bordeaux, Marseille and Cherbourg) but without success. He planned a tax on all landowners, rejected by parliament, and was disgraced by the king on 8 April 1787.
Letter signed, dated 23.08.1786. Replying to a letter from his correspondent, Marshal Armand-Louis Biron and the memorandum that accompanied it concerning the claims of the officers of the French Guards against the capitation tax for which they were included in the rolls of the city of Paris: "… je vais sur le champ m'occuper à rassembler les éclaircissements nécessaires pour mettre sa Majesté à portée de statuer définitivement sur ces représentations…".
