After graduating from Saint Cyr in 1900, he served in North Africa and then Constantinople. In 1922, he returned to Morocco where he was promoted to Colonel. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his role in the capture of Abd-el-Krim. During the Second World War, he dealt with de Gaulle, Roosevelt, Churchill and Eisenhower.
