Foch's Chief of Staff. He was sent to Warsaw as military adviser, then appointed French high commissioner in Syria.
Recalled in 1939, he had to recommend the armistice. Minister under Pétain, he was sent to Algeria, arrested by the Gestapo, interned in Germany and released by the Americans. He was the last French general of the Second World War still alive in 1965.
