Trained at the Saint Cyr military school, he left for Sudan and then for the conquest of Morocco. During the First World War, he won the victory at Charleroi and led the counter-attacks at Verdun. An opponent of Pétain, he was marginalised. On his return in 1918, he led brilliant offensives during the Battle of the Marne.
Typed letter signed and dated Paris, 07.02.1923 to General Coffec: "…la présence de cet officier est, en effet, des plus utile…".
