HISTORY - CHANZY Antoine Alfred Eugène (1823 - 1883) - Autograph letter signed

Commander of the Ist Loire army in 1870-71, he distinguished himself by his resistance to the Germans at Vendôme and Le Mans. He was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and was elected to the National Assembly. After the war, he was governor of Algeria and then ambassador to Russia. Autograph letter signed and dated St Petersburg, 17.10.1881: "… me voilà obligé de manquer à votre gracieuse invitation…"
