Military training at Polytechnique. Served in Algeria and Gouadeloupe. In 1852, he was transferred as Governor of Senegal. He showed an interest in local customs and took part in the country's economic development. When he resigned in 1870, the country was prosperous. He then took command of the Armée du Nord in the war against Germany. In 1879, he was elected senator and in 1880, he was made Chancellor of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
Autograph letter signed, dated Lille, 18.08.1883 to Captain:"… Beur-G. uet n'est pas un nom, cela veut dire le chef de la province de Guet…".
