Lot 186 · The Langer Collection · 29 April 2024
A "strong head", he was arrested in 1800 for talking about assassinating Bonaparte. In 1804, he was reinstated in his rank. He was promoted to Colonel in 1808 and General in 1811. He wrote "To his fellow citizens, General Donnadieu" to justify his actions during the Hundred Days. Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour.
Autograph letter signed "Donnadieu", to Vice-Admiral Baudin, s.1. December 2. 1 p. 1/2, large in-4° autograph address. Beautiful piece. Letter relating to a discovery by a Mr. de Jouffroy (The first working steamboat model was launched by Claude de Jouffroy in 1783) that the slowness of the offices and the considerations of which the latter speaks (in two letters to General Donnadieu) could put him... in the case of taking the advantage of his system..." etc. The general continues by asking Vice-Admiral Baudin if he still wants to take it upon himself to speak to Admiral Duperre about this affair, etc. What a sad spectacle this Chamber is: where are we going? he ends up. and 2 years in prison following the publication of his book "On Old Europe" against General Donnadieu.
