In the national guard in 1789, he was at Verdun in 1792 and won the victory at Saumur. He then defeated the Vendéens at Le Mans and, at the age of 24, became brigadier general and commander-in-chief of the army of the west. In 1796 he blockaded Mainz to cover Jourdan's retreat. He was mortally wounded.
