Lot 15 · The Langer Collection · 29 April 2024
Daughter of Jérôme, engaged to the future Napoleon III. In 1840 she married Count Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, best known for his benevolence and enlightened taste for literature, from whom she divorced in 1847 with the authorization of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. She settled in Paris and, during the Second Empire, ran a popular literary salon.
On a letter from the painter Roybet, who said that the price of 5000 francs was correct, she wrote: "Il me semble que 4 suffirait. Le tableau me plaît extrêmement. Pensez-vous qu'on puisse les lui proposer ?".
