He began his naval career at the age of 15. Although he lost an arm in a naval battle in the Indian Ocean, he continued and became a captain in 1812. With the second Bourbon Restoration, he returned to the merchant navy in Le Havre. In 1838 he resumed his naval command and went to fight in Mexico and then Texas. Like Lafayette, he personified France's aid to small republics seeking independence. In 1874, he was elevated to the dignity of Admiral of France by Napoleon III. Baudin, who had lost his right arm at the siege of St. Jean d'Acre (1799), wrote with his left hand.
