After Saint Cyr, he was a training officer, including three years in Morocco. In 1940, he joined de Gaulle in London. With his division, he was instrumental in the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944, then Strasbourg on 23 November; appointed head of the French expeditionary corps in the Far East, he signed the surrender of Japan on behalf of France. Inspector of the armed forces, he died in a plane crash in North Africa.
