A graduate of St Cyr and Saumur, he distinguished himself in the First World War and then served in Morocco from 1921 to 1926. He was a member of General Weygand's staff. In 1944, he landed in Provence, travelled up the Rhône valley, crossed the Rhine and pushed on to the Danube. On the night of 8 to 9 May 1945, he signed the surrender of Germany in Berlin on behalf of France. In 1950, he was High Commissioner to Indochina. He died of cancer and was posthumously promoted to Marshal of France.
