During the First World War, he commanded the 1st corps of the Vth army, then the Vth army itself, with which he fought in the first victory at the Marne. In 1916, he was considered to be Joffre's replacement. In 1918, he was reprimanded following the Third Battle of the Aisne. He was moved to Salonika and took part in the Balkan front, pushing Bulgaria out of the war. In 1922, he was made Marshal of France and in 1934 he was elected to the Académie Française.
