Well-educated, he joined the Lyon National Guard in 1793, rising through the ranks to become Captain. He distinguished himself in the Italian and brief Helvetia campaigns. In 1811, Napoleon made him Marshal of the Empire. He is the only French general to succeed in the Spanish campaign.
