He followed his brother to Egypt. He was appointed King of Holland in 1806 and won the love of his people. Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. By order of the Emperor, he abdicated in 1810. Retired into private life under the name of Comte de Saint-Leu, he devoted himself to poetry. He had three sons, of whom only the third survived to become Emperor Napoleon III.
Document signed, dated Joigny, 13 Brumaire year 11. Service record of citizen Alexis Durosel, Maréchal des logis, chief of the 5th regiment of Dragons. Signed: "Louis Bonaparte”.
