Son of a Scotsman, he began his military career in the Irish Legion. He distinguished himself at Wagram. He took part in the Russian campaign. During the Hundred Days, he joined the National Guard as a grenadier. Napoleon made him Marshal of the Empire in 1809.
Certificate of non-activity issued to citizen Duran of the 14th 1/2 line brigade. In addition to the signatures of Mac Donald, Rey and Moreau, the document bears those of the members of the administrative council of the said corps. ”Nous Membres du Conseil d'Administration certifions que depuis le premier germinal an 8, époque de l'incorporation du 25e Bataillon auxiliaire de la Haute Garonne dans la 14e Demi-Brigade, le Citoyen Duran, Lieutenant, y est resté provisoirement à la suite de l'autorisation du Général Macdonald, alors inspecteur général d'Infanterie;…" signed : “Macdonald”.
