At 17, he was a drummer in an artillery regiment. In 1791, he left the army to become a grocer. A year later, he returned to the army and quickly rose through the ranks. Napoleon appointed him General, then Marshal of the Empire. He served under Louis XVIII, then Louis-Philippe.
