Served under Bonaparte in Italy, then as ambassador to Vienna. Minister of War, he refused to take part in 18 Brumaire. Marshal of the Empire in 1804, he distinguished himself on several fronts. Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor. He became governor of the Hanseatic cities, and was at war with Sweden, stopping operations in 1808. After Wagram, he fell out with Napoleon. The Swedes offered him the Swedish throne. He allied himself with Alexander I and defeated the French. After the Peace of Kiel, he devoted himself to his task and founded the present Swedish dynasty.
