Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Montauban, 1770 - Paris, 1867)Autograph letter signed, not dated (but postmarked 1834), by one of the most acclaimed artists of European Romanticism, addressed to Monsieur Varcolier, "chef de bureau des Belles Arts à la prefecture de la Seine". He prays to be replaced by another artist in the committee "pour nominer le peintre de l'hemicycle". "Je suis determiné plus que jamais à eviter le plus possible d'affaires de ce genre...". He refers to the committee for the selection of a painter of the hémicycle de l'École des Beaux Arts in Paris. This selection was won by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) who worked on the decorations from 1836 to 1841. 1 p. In-8°. Light humidity stains.Autograph address and postmarks on the 4th.
