Description

Large photographic portrait with autograph dedication signed, dated “Milano 20.07.904” by the Italian singer, violinist and impresario. After achieving great success in 1874 at the Dal Verme in Milan in Alexandre-Charles Lecoq’s Giroflé-Girofla, he began to perform the operatic repertoire at the Riccardi in Bergamo, singing Don Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, the opera he interpreted with greatest predilection throughout his career. His career reached its peak in the 1880s and 1890s, when he also sang Figaro at the Costanzi in Rome under the baton of Teofilo De Angelis, on 23 October 1899, and took part in the first performance of Alfredo Catalani’s Wally at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, on 20 January 1892, under the baton of Edoardo Mascheroni, playing the pawn of Schnals. He often performed with the famous soprano Luisa Tetrazzini, with whom he had an affair that soon became the centre of the chronicles. (16 x 22 cm).
