Description
Autograph letter signed, dated “Peterhof le 18 septembre 1882” by the Russian pianist, composer and conductor, who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He became most famous for his series of historical recitals, seven enormous, consecutive concerts covering the history of piano music. He wrote 20 operas, the best known of which is The Demon. He composed many other works, including five piano concertos, six symphonies and many solo piano works along with a substantial output of works for chamber ensemble. Addressed to the composer Jules Massenet, inviting him to give concerts in Saint-Petersburg.: “…N’étant chargé de la direction des concerts de la société musicale pour cette saison je voudrais les illustrer par quelque chose d’extraordinaire. Je m’adresse donc à vous, pour vous demander si vous ne consentiriez pas à venir ici pour diriger un des concerts et y faire entendre vos compositions! – …”. 2 pp. In-8.
